						<title>Interruption of network connectivity at Heinrich-Heine-Straße 11</title>

<p class="bodytext">your connection to the internet and the university will be interrupted on Saturday, September 28 2019, from around 7:00 to approx. 12:00.</p>
<p class="bodytext">The reason is the shutdown of the transformer station Lessingstraße 45. Urgent maintenance will be performed.</p>
<p class="bodytext">To our knowledge electrical power to the dormitory itself will remain.</p>

						<title>Interruption of network connectivity on September 02</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">Dear Users,</p>
<p class="bodytext">on Monday, September 02 2019, at 12:08, it came to an interruption of network connectivity for all dormitories. We were able to quickly diagnose it to be a bigger problem, which also affected the university.</p>
<p class="bodytext">When contacting the computation center, we learned that an excavator damaged a power line and data cables to Karl-Kegel-Bau. We were not given an estimated time to recovery.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Fortunately the computation center was able to restore connectivity at 14:20, so that our users can access the internet again without problems.</p>

						<title>Fixed faulty assignment of IP addresses</title>

<p class="bodytext">We received more reports in recent weeks about faulty IP address assignment to user systems. The error has now been detected and corrected.The IP address assignment via DHCP is handled by two systems which dynamically divide the available addresses among each other. Thus, addresses can still be distributed if one of the systems fails. Unfortunately, due to a configuration error on our part, the communication between the systems was interrupted, which prevented the systems from exchanging available addresses. This caused a system to run out of available IP addresses and it did not respond to requests from user systems.We apologize for the problems and thank the users who reported the problem.</p>

<p class="bodytext">in this semester we will again offer a consultation.</p>
<p class="bodytext">On <b>Monday the 1st October</b> you find us in the basement of the dormitory Agricolastraße 16 next to the caretakers office. From <b>10am to 2pm</b> you can give us the form you received from the dormitories' administration. Don't forget to fill in your university login name. You can bring us the guest login forms, too, of course. <b>Both forms have to be signed and stamped by the student services!</b></p>
<p class="bodytext">Please note, that we can not offer extra consultations in the other dormitories, so everyone should use this consultation. Of course you can also ask us questions related to the internet connection in the dormitories.</p>

						<title>Tentative Network Change in Winklerstraße 12</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext"><span id="result_box" lang="en">In order to hopefully solve the problems with faulty user devices, we will change our network in Winklerstraße 12 on Thursday, 26th October, so that the individual users are more isolated from each other.</span> Also the in-house data traffic will then run over our two central routers.</p>
<p class="bodytext">This is to prevent malicious network devices from interfering with the rest of the network, as well as intercepting user configuration errors.</p>
<p class="bodytext">This tentative change will take place around 12:00 and will probably only take a few minutes. Users do not have to change settings in their devices.</p>
<p class="bodytext">If the conversion succeeds, the other dormitories will follow shortly.</p>]]></content:encoded>

						<title>An explanation for the network problems during the last days</title>

<p class="bodytext">many of you have noticed the network problems in the last two days. Some of you also contacted us. We want to explain the problems with this message.</p>
<p class="bodytext">We had problems with our user management. To prevent failures we use two systems which can take over in case the other system fails. On Thursday we wanted to upgrade our systems. Because of the redundancy we didn't expect an outage, so we did not make an announcement for the upgrade. During the upgrade one of the two systems is down for being upgraded and the other one has to serve all the requests on our network, so there is not redundancy for the duration of the upgrade.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Unfortunately, a grave system error happened on the only active system. Because we needed three hours to upgrade the first system we didn't recognise the network outage immediately and so the network was down for all StuNet users.</p>
<p class="bodytext">After spending one more hour we could restore the network access for registered users. The registration of new devices was still not possible because we couldn't find the problem instantly. On Friday we upgraded the second system. Afterwards the registration was possible again.</p>
<p class="bodytext">We hope the outage did not cause too much trouble for you and we apologize for the inconvenience.</p>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">Wie bereits in den Wohnheimen Winklerstraße und Agricolastraße hält nun das neue Anmeldeverfahren mit Uni-Login (Nutzerkennzeichen des URZ)&nbsp;auch&nbsp;in der Heinrich-Heine-Straße 11&nbsp;Einzug. Registrierungen bis zum Ende des Monats bedürfen keiner Freischaltung durch einen Admin.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="bodytext">Im Folgenden findet ihr bekannte Probleme und entsprechende Lösungen. Bei weiteren Fragen könnt ihr uns natürlich per Mail kontaktieren oder persönlich bei einem Admin um Rat bitten.</p>
<p class="bodytext"><b>Mögliche Probleme und Lösungen</b></p>
<p class="bodytext">Unsere Erfahrungen bisher haben gezeigt, dass falsche Netzwerkeinstellungen oder die Verwendung von Kaspersky Anit-Virensoftware Probleme bereiten können.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Bitte stellt euer Gerät am Anschluss so ein, dass die IP-Adresse und die DNS-Adresse automatisch bezogen werden (manchmal auch als dynamische IP oder DHCP bezeichnet). Normalerweise sind die Geräte standardmäßig so eingestellt. Bei Problemen befindet sich eine Anleitung unten unter Links.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Wir haben aktuelle Kaspersky Versionen zum Download bereitgestellt, mit welcher keine Probleme im StuNet bestehen. Diese sind in Deutsch derzeit noch nicht auf der Homepage von Kaspersky verfügbar und wurden uns vorab vom Kaspersky Support zur Verfügung gestellt. Kaspersky empfiehlt das Beenden von Kaspersky, eine Deinstallation unter Beibehaltung der Einstellungen, einen Neustart und die Installation der neuen Version. Wir hatten aber keine Probleme damit, die Installation direkt auch ohne eine vorherige Deinstallation durchzuführen (also ein Ersetzen/Update der alten Version). 						<title>Last minute information regarding the changes on Wednesday</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div><p class="bodytext">This week we will finally launch our <b>new login system</b>. For that matter we would like to give you some advice so the transition to the new system will be as smooth as possible.</p>
<p class="bodytext">On Wednesday between 9:30am and 11am all users will be disconnected, resulting in your devices logging in to StuNet again automatically. Users who use a router to connect to StuNet can of course keep using their router like they did before. In that case, the login should be done on the computer connected to the router via LAN/WLAN.</p>
<p class="bodytext">The login will take place&nbsp;completely in the browser. As soon as you try to access a website, a login mask will appear. If you cannot use the internet anymore or if the login page does not show up automatically please open <b>login.stunet.tu-freiberg.de</b>.</p></div><div><p class="bodytext">On the login page, please use your university login to reactivate internet access.</p>
<p class="bodytext"><span class="important">Should you run into any problems don't hesitate to contact us. There will be <b>special office hours on Wednesday from 1:45pm to 6 pm</b> in the basement of dormitory Agricolastraße 16. 						<title>Changes ahead - New registration process</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div><p class="bodytext">Soon we will be finishing our construction work of the last few weeks. Because of our new devices our main network components are now redundant. Should there be any breakdowns they will not affect the internet use anymore. Furthermore we were able to improve the quality of the connection to the different dormitories and network segments.</p></div><div><p class="bodytext">Along with this transition we are changing the way of your devices register on our network. We no longer need the MAC-Address of your devices. From <b>June 15th 2016</b> you will have to use your <b>university login </b>to set up your device. If you confirm your access by logging in within this month you do not have to check back with StuNet.</p></div><div><p class="bodytext">We like to inform you that user whose devices are set on static IP have to change their network settings. To be able to access our network it is essential to configure your router or directly connected PC to &quot;obtain an IP address automatically&quot; (DHCP). 						<title>A perfect storm</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">On Tuesday there was an <b>outage of over two hours</b> in the Winklerstraße student residences that also caused problems for some of our users in the other buildings. We are terribly sorry and hope that the disruption did not cause major inconveniences for you. Further below we describe what happened.</p>
<p class="bodytext">We know that network outages of such severity are very annoying. We have been increasing our efforts since mid last year to improve the resilience of our core network components.</p>
<p class="bodytext">In the coming weeks, we will restore the redundant connection to the university computing center, replace the old router in Winklerstraße 22 and deploy a new, <b>completely redundant core network</b>. Its structure is designed so no failure of a single optical fibre or core network component can result in an outage for our users.</p>
<p class="bodytext">I will now describe the cause of this weeks problems: For monday we had announced short network interruptions on our website and we had posted notices in the respective buildings. We wanted to update the network components in Winklerstraße to the newest software, so we would be able to restore the redundant connection to the university computing center. The URZ replaced their routers last year which meant we could no longer continue to use the &quot;RIP&quot; routing protocol. Everything worked as planned - there were two short network outages of less than five minutes. However, we also had to change the partition layout for the one of the upgrades, i.e. the way data is stored on the hard drives. All systems in StuNet store their data on at least two different hard drives simultaneously (&quot;RAID&quot;), so these kind of changes can be done online without interruption of the service. But when we rebootet the access router in Winklerstraße 22 on Tuesday to complete the upgrade, the system could no longer boot. Apparently the tool &quot;resize2fs&quot; had damaged the partition in a way that it was no longer readable by the bootloader (the operating system was unaffected). We are prepared for these kinds of problems, but none of the two USB sticks we brought could be used to boot the rescue system. We had brought a CD as well but with an incompatible version (64bit instead of 32bit). We should have checked beforehand, but we simply did not expect both USB sticks to fail. So we had to find an internet-connected PC with a CD burner and a blank CD before we were able to boot our rescue system, create the partitions from scratch and copy of the data to restore the system to a usable state.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Unfortunately, our problems did not end there. On Tuesday and Wednesday we noticed the fibre optics interfaces were going offline in irregular intervals for several seconds. We were finally able to locate the problem in a newer version of the driver for our Intel cards and hopefully everything is now working again as you have come to expect it from us.</p>

						<title>New server rack in operation</title>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">After a server rail threw us back in our planning for a while, we could finally begin to relocate the fiber optics cables at 11:15am and at 12:10am - only 10 minutes late - the network was completely restored.</p>
<p class="bodytext">We are very happy to be able to focus on more important things now: Improve the reliability of the network and enable users to sign up using the university username instead of the often-mistyped mac addresses.</p>

						<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">At least those of you living in the Agricolastraße buildings have probably noticed that last year the air conditioning in our switch rooms failed. To prevent a complete failure we shut down all not absolutely necessary servers and installed a mobile AC unit. Naturally that was a very loud and inefficient solution.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Repairing the old AC was not an option economically so we made a virtue of necessity and upgraded the room in the basement of Agricolastraße 16 and we now have enough space to install our systems in an accessible and well air-conditioned fashion.</p>
<p class="bodytext">The move is almost done, we just have to introduce the fiber optics cables into the new rack. This will result in interruption of the internet connectivity</p>

<p class="bodytext">Wednesday evening at about 18:30 there was an outage at the university's computing center (URZ) which cause the internet connection of the whole university to fail. A large part of the campus was reconnected in the morning of Thursday. Unfortunately the outage had corrupted settings that are necessary for the connection between StuNet and thre rest of the campus. This problem was only diagnosed on Friday. We worked together with the URZ to restore the settings and all student residences should be back online.</p>
<p class="bodytext">We are very sorry for this disruption but unfortunately there is nothing we can do when the university network fails.</p>
