An explanation for the network problems during the last days

Dear Users,

many of you have noticed the network problems in the last two days. Some of you also contacted us. We want to explain the problems with this message.

We had problems with our user management. To prevent failures we use two systems which can take over in case the other system fails. On Thursday we wanted to upgrade our systems. Because of the redundancy we didn't expect an outage, so we did not make an announcement for the upgrade. During the upgrade one of the two systems is down for being upgraded and the other one has to serve all the requests on our network, so there is not redundancy for the duration of the upgrade.

Unfortunately, a grave system error happened on the only active system. Because we needed three hours to upgrade the first system we didn't recognise the network outage immediately and so the network was down for all StuNet users.

After spending one more hour we could restore the network access for registered users. The registration of new devices was still not possible because we couldn't find the problem instantly. On Friday we upgraded the second system. Afterwards the registration was possible again.

We hope the outage did not cause too much trouble for you and we apologize for the inconvenience.
